Knowledge Management Portal

The Post Nargis Knowledge Management Portal aims to document and institutionalize the good practices from post Nargis operations to strengthen the implementation of the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER). Throughout ASEAN’s active engagement and presence in Myanmar post Nargis, ASEAN has identified some key lessons learnt that can be used to inform ASEAN’s approach and strategy in post-disaster relief and recovery efforts in the future.

On 2 and 3 May 2008, Cyclone Nargis (category 3) swept in from the Bay of Bengal and struck Myanmar’s Yangon and Ayeyarwady Divisions, resulting in unprecedented large-scale loss of life and destruction of infrastructure, property and livelihoods. Approximately 140,000 people were killed or unaccounted for following the cyclone. 2.4 million people – one third of the population of Ayeyarwady and Yangon Divisions – were affected by the cyclone in 37 townships covering an area of 23,500 square kilometres.

Feature Story : Smiling with Relief

Htay Htay Mar, still hopes her mother is alive. When Cyclone Nargis started roaring across the Ayeyarwady delta, she was traveling back to her village by boat having been to a nearby town to buy provisions.

The boatman wanted to turn back when violent waves began rocking the boat, but Htay Htay Mar urged him onwards because she was worried about her mother who was at home alone.
